Types of Marine Surveys Explained: Which Survey Do I Need?
A plain-language guide to pre-purchase, insurance, appraisal, and damage surveys — Treasure Coast to Miami Beach — Veteran Yacht Services, Stuart, FL.
If someone told you that you “need a survey” and left it at that, you’re not alone. Buyers, owners, brokers, and agents along Southeastern Florida get that line all the time — without a clear answer on which survey. Pre-purchase, insurance, fair market appraisal, and damage/claim work are different products. Ordering the wrong one wastes time and money.
This page provides short explanations of each survey type, then links to the right service page — or a clear path to contact us when you’re still sorting it out.

What Are the Main Types of Marine Surveys?
The main marine survey products Veteran Yacht Services markets are pre-purchase, insurance (often called condition & value / C&V in underwriting), fair market / USPAP appraisal, and insurance claim / damage surveys. We also offer yacht deliveries, consulting, and private boat handling instruction — those aren’t survey types, just related services listed on our homepage.
Pre-purchase survey
A pre-purchase survey is a detailed inspection of overall condition and performance when you’re planning to buy a new or used boat. It’s buyer-focused: what’s accessible, what’s wrong, how it performs, and a written report you can use to decide, renegotiate, or walk. pre-purchase marine survey in Florida.
Insurance / condition & value (C&V) survey
An insurance survey helps the insurance company decide whether the vessel poses a reasonable risk. It evaluates structural components and general safety for the vessel’s intended purpose — including when you’re insuring a newly purchased boat or renewing / reinsuring a yacht. insurance marine survey in Florida.
Fair market / USPAP appraisal
A USPAP-compliant fair market appraisal documents the vessel’s fair market value for purposes such as financing, estate settlements, legal cases, and donations. It’s a value-documentation product — not a substitute for a buyer’s pre-purchase inspection or an underwriting insurance survey unless that’s what the requesting party actually asked for. See our USPAP yacht appraisal page, or contact us about appraisal work.
Insurance claim / damage survey
After grounding, collision, storm, fire, or a similar loss, an insurance claim / damage survey is post-incident documentation — a different product from underwriting C&V or pre-purchase. It does not promise claim payment or settlement outcomes. Details: marine damage / claim survey in Florida. If you’re in a claim now, request a quote or call 269-998-6767 and say so up front.
Which Survey Do I Need?
Match the job: buying → pre-purchase; binding or renewing coverage → insurance / C&V; documented value for financing, estate, legal, or donation → USPAP fair market appraisal; after a loss or incident → damage / claim survey. If your situation mixes needs — for example, you just bought and now need insurance — say that when you contact us rather than assuming one product covers everything.

Pre-Purchase Survey vs. Insurance Survey
A pre-purchase survey is buyer-focused: detailed condition and performance before you commit to the purchase. An insurance survey helps the insurance company decide whether a vessel poses a reasonable risk, evaluating structural components and general safety for its intended purpose. Same industry, different jobs — don’t force one product into the other’s purpose.
Pre-purchase
Depth for a purchase decision — negotiation leverage, walk-away clarity, and a clearer picture before money changes hands. Details: pre-purchase marine survey.
Insurance / C&V
Risk for coverage. Structural components, general safety, intended purpose — written so an underwriting conversation has something solid to work from. Details: insurance marine survey.
Exact carrier rules — how often a survey is needed, vessel age cutoffs, checklist extras — vary. Confirm with your agent or carrier; we don’t invent frequency rules on this hub.
What Is a Condition & Value (C&V) Survey?
In underwriting, “condition & value” or C&V often refers to an insurance-oriented survey that supports the insurer’s risk decision. At Veteran Yacht Services, our insurance survey work is framed around documenting the vessels condition so the insurance underwriter can determine whether the vessel is a reasonable risk, with evaluation of structural components and general safety for intended purpose. See the full insurance / C&V survey page.
A USPAP fair market appraisal is a separate value-documentation product for financing, estate, legal, and donation needs — not the same product as an underwriting C&V survey. See our USPAP yacht appraisal page if value documentation is what you actually need.
Appraisal vs. Survey — When You Need Documented Value
A USPAP-compliant fair market appraisal determines fair market value for financing, estate settlements, legal cases, and donations. It is not a substitute for a buyer’s pre-purchase inspection or an insurance underwriting survey unless that is what the requesting party actually asked for. If a bank, attorney, or advisor said “get an appraisal,” clarify whether they mean USPAP value documentation or an underwriting/condition survey before you book.
See our USPAP yacht appraisal page, or request a quote with the purpose named up front.
Damage & Insurance Claim Surveys (After an Incident)
After grounding, collision, storm, fire, or a similar loss, a damage / insurance claim survey is a different product from underwriting C&V or pre-purchase. The purpose is objective documentation of damage for the claim conversation — not a promise of claim payment, approval, or settlement amount. Typically insurance adjusters hire marine surveyors to assist them with a damage claims to boats and yachts. Details: marine damage / insurance claim survey in Florida. If you’re in a claim now, request a quote or call 269-998-6767.
Shared Inspection Scope (What “Survey” Usually Means Here)
Across our survey work, a survey typically means a thorough exam of accessible areas, bow to stern — hull and deck structures plus plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems as far as they’re accessible. No destructive testing; we don’t disassemble systems or fixed compartments as normal scope. If disassembly is required for a fair evaluation, we may recommend a qualified marine technician. Reports always include the surveyor’s opinion of fair market value.
Product purpose still differs even when physical inspection habits overlap. Pre-purchase, insurance, appraisal, and damage work answer different questions. Standards context: marine survey regulations. Corridor overview: small craft and yacht surveying in Florida.
